Obtaining a Second Opinion (Histopathology Consultation)

In a small percentage of cases, obtaining a second opinion on a histopathological examination may lead to a complete change in diagnosis, such as in cases of malignant or benign neoplasms, inflammatory disorders, or microbial infections. Such a change can significantly impact treatment decisions and prognosis.

More frequently, a second opinion results in modifications to the tumor grade or cancer staging, which can affect both prognosis and therapeutic management.

A second opinion is often sought when the diagnosis, prognosis, or proposed treatment plan requires further confirmation. This is particularly important in complex, rare, or borderline cases, where an additional expert evaluation may help clarify the diagnosis and support the most appropriate clinical decision.

For example:

  1. when a tumour is considered borderline resectable
  2. when the tumour is of borderline malignancy
  3. or when the case is at the threshold of requiring adjuvant chemotherapy.

The opinion of a specialist with expertise in this specific type of tumour can be of particular importance.

There are diagnostic techniques, such as immunohistochemistry and molecular testing, which can significantly increase the likelihood of identifying the origin of the tumour, especially in cases where imaging examinations, such as CT and MRI scans, are unable to detect the primary tumour site.

The second opinion report will be sent to your treating physician and to you via encrypted email. Please contact us for any further clarifications.
