The advantages of the Aptima Test
A necessary and sufficient condition for cell immortalization, neoplastic transformation, and cervical cancer development is the expression of the E6/E7 oncogenes. The diagnostic test that detects the mRNA expression of these 2 E6/E7 oncogenes is the Aptima mRNA HPV test. Aptima detects the mRNA expression of high-risk – carcinogenic – HPV subtypes.
Therefore, it identifies those HPV infections that have the greatest potential to develop into serious damage. While other HPV tests target the DNA of the virus, the Aptima HPV test detects mRNA and therefore active HPV infection. In other words, it detects those mechanisms that promote cellular transformation and the possibility of cancer development.
A negative Aptima mRNA HPV result does not rule out the presence of other subtypes of the virus, which, however, belong to the low-risk group for malignant cell transformation and cancer.
Aptima mRNA HPV detects 14 high-risk subtypes, 3 of which (16, 18 & 45) are associated with 80% of all invasive cervical cancers, while 9 of which (16, 18, 45, 31, 33, 52, 58, 35 & 39) are associated with >85% of cervical cancers.
