What is Pharmacogenetics?
Pharmacogenetics is the branch of science that studies how genetic differences between individuals affect response to drugs . In other words, it tries to explain why a drug may be effective for one person but cause side effects or have no effect on another.
The goal of pharmacogenetics is to achieve personalized pharmacotherapy , that is, the selection and administration of the right drug, at the right dose, for the right patient.

These are two of the most important pharmacogenetic tests used in oncology today, because mutations in the DPYD and UGT1A1 genes are associated with severe toxicities from certain chemotherapy drugs. Early detection of any mutations in these genes (ideally before the start of chemotherapy) implies avoiding administration or adjusting the dose of the chemotherapy drug based on the patient’s tolerance, in order to prevent adverse effects.
A small amount of blood (~10 ml) is taken, as in a routine hematology test. In the event that the blood collection is not performed at Microdiagnostics facilities, the blood should be collected in a 10ml EDTA blood collection vial.
Transport conditions: The vial with the blood is kept at refrigerator temperature (preservation) and after collection, it is recommended to be transported at Microdiagnostics facilities as soon as possible.
